As Vice President of Liberty Mutual Group and Director of the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety (2006-2017), expanded the scope of award-winning, peer-reviewed behavioral, epidemiological, ergonomics and disability research. Also formalized the post-doctoral fellow collaboration with Harvard and other universities and established a unique knowledge translation program.
Previously Director of Standards Research and Development at Transport Canada (2002-2006), established vehicle and motor carrier safety regulations, and oversaw the government’s extensive research program into vehicle crashworthiness and crash avoidance. Led Canada’s federal research and policy into automated driving.
Holds a doctorate degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto, specializing in human factors. Over 40 years of professional research, practice and leadership experience in air, ground, and underwater applications. Board Certified Professional Ergonomist (BCPE) and served on the BCPE Board of Directors. Published over 170 scientific and technical reports, and conference and journal articles. Lead editor of Handbook of Human Factors in Litigation (CRC Press, 2004) and editor of Ergonomics and Safety of Intelligent Driver Interfaces (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 1997).
Past President of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA). Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), and a past president and Honorary Fellow of the Human Factors Association of Canada/Association canadienne d'ergonomie (HFAC/ACE). Recipient of numerous awards, including the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Award for Engineering Excellence and the IEA Distinguished Service Award.
