Summary:?? We are about to submit a proposal for a 2023 AAAI Spring Symposium on the topic of "LifeCycle Transparency".?? We need "expressions of interest" in the topic to support our proposal.?? If you're interested in the topic (no other commitment necessary) please indicate that fact by responding to this email with a "Yes".?? Deadline is Tuesday, Oct 18.???? Thanks!
More detail:
We are about to submit a proposal for a 2023 AAAI Spring Symposium on the topic of "LifeCycle Transparency". More detail on what we mean by that heading is provided below.
If needed, you can learn more about the AAAI Symposia Series here:?? https://www.aaai.org/Symposia/symposia.php.?? Essentially, they are ~2 day meetings on a novel or emerging topic.?? The symposia are intended to form a community of interest around the topic.?? Many symposia have produced books or special journal issues in later years, and some have gone on to form large communities with whole conferences devoted to them.?? Participation is open, but requirements are kept fairly minimal-- position papers, abstracts, etc.?? Several symposia are held concurrently as separate tracks.?? Spring symposia are held at Stanford University sometime in March.??
Symposia proposals are reviewed and selected by AAAI to form the line up for 2023.?? We have a proposal mostly ready to submit, but one requirement is a list of individuals who have "expressed interest" in the topic.?? We're sending you this because we think you might find the topic relevant and interesting.?? At this point, we're just seeking expressions of interest-- no commitment to attend or anything else is necessary.?? Your expression of interest means we will include your name on a list of interested parties we'll submit to AAAI as a part of our proposal.?? To provide an expression of interest, simply reply "Yes" to this email.
Please feel free to disseminate this to anyone you think might be interested.
Deadline for expressions of interest is 10/18.??
LifeCycle Transparency (LCT) is a term we are using to refer to techniques that "spread" the transfer of transparency information about automation (and what it is doing when and why) outside of the time of execution, and/or which make transfer more efficient within that period.?? LCT is a potential solution to the problem that seems inherent in transparency about automation behaviors: that while transparency information is undeniably useful, it frequently come at times when human operators are already heavily loaded.?? After all, automation is frequently adopted precisely because the human is over-burdened or otherwise incapable of accurately processing all necessary situational information at the time it is necessary-- therefore, asking that human to ALSO process transparency information about what automation is doing at that same time seems problematic at best.?? On the other hand, transparency information about hypothetical and actual automation behaviors can be conveyed both before and after the time of use by techniques such as training, collaborative planning, contingency development and awareness, explanation, post-mission debriefing, etc.?? At root, all of these techniques seem to be about developing understanding, trust and synchronized models of how automation will behave.?? If you are interested in any of these topics and, especially, how they work together to achieve the benefits of transparency in human-automation interaction, then please reply "Yes" to this email.
