July Monthly Member Conversation: Trust

  • 1.  July Monthly Member Conversation: Trust

    Posted 07-16-2025 23:47
Recent studies on trust, trust measurement, and factors affecting trust will be the focus of our July Monthly Member Conversation. We are honored to feature our HART TG Historian this month. Dr. Thomas Meyer will review three recent studies on trust to seed the conversation. Please join us on Tuesday, July 29 at 9am PDT/12pm EDT to enjoy the presentation and conversation and, as always, please feel free to invite a guest.
Title: Airline Pilot Trust in Automation: A 2024 Quantitative Study Using the System Trustworthiness Survey
    Short Description
The presentation will consist of three parts.
    1.        Review of Alarcon et al.'s (2023) study Development and Validation of the System Trustworthiness Scale.
    2.        Review of the 2024 study: Purpose, Performance, and Process Influence on Airline Pilot Trust in Automation Technology: A Quantitative Study.
    3.        Review of Harris et al.'s (2025) study: Investigating the Effects of Classification Model Error Type on Trust-Relevant Criteria in a Human-Machine Learning Interaction Task.
The discussion of the 2023 validation study is vital in that it establishes how the STS measures trust.
The common thread among these three studies is that they utilized the System Trustworthiness Scale (STS) as the measurement for their research. The 2024 study is unique in that its population consisted of a single profession – airline pilots.
The discussion of the 2025 study offers insight into the consistencies and variations between population types within a more defined artificial intelligence.
Dr. Meyer has PhD and MS degrees in Aeronautics from Liberty University and BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Aviation from The Ohio State University. His present work focuses on applications of artificial intelligence in graduate-level education, instructional design, technology, and as the subject of curriculum development in aviation.
