Hello everyone,
We are excited to host our second Monthly Memeber Conversation. This month's speaker will be Dr. Mengtao Lyu. Dr. Lyu earned his Ph.D. from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Hybrid Intelligence (HI) Lab at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests span understanding cognitive status through visual attention patterns in transportation systems, predicting human performance using psychophysiological data, and designing human-centered AI support systems.

Talk Title: Through the lens of Situation Awareness: The Promise and Peril of Generative AI for HCI in Autonomous Driving
Abstract: These advances of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI, GAI) technologies are expected to redefine how humans interact with automated systems in daily life. One prominent application domain is autonomous driving, where GenAI can not only react to user input and environmental conditions, but also proactively initiate actions across modalities based on context and reasoning. Such innovations promise to make human–AV interactions more intuitive, richer, and more tailored to individual needs. Despite these promises, applying GenAI to autonomous driving raises concerns. The probabilistic and often unverifiable outputs of generative models can miscalibrate user trust and deteriorate users' projection ability. This survey adopts dual perspectives, namely promises and perils, to investigate natural interaction, driver assistance, simulation training, and intelligent interface design in the existing studies. The objective of this work is to synthesize the thematic analysis through the lens of Situation Awareness (SA) and provide implications for the future of HCI in autonomous driving.
