As part of the Feature Month, XRTG is pleased to share work by out members in the HFES Bulletin and across our platforms. Drs. Fangyuan Cheng and Karen Chen discuss how VR can positively impact learning and processing, but also has limitations that must be considered, as they could negatively impact learning.

In case you missed the bulletin, the document is attached and the abstract is below. XRTG, HFES, and our wider communities are lucky to have educators and researchers who embody our principles and share what they have learned, so that all can benefit!

Learning and Information Processing in Virtual Reality: Reflection on Practice

    Fangyuan Cheng and Karen Chen

"Virtual reality (VR) is well-studied for its affordances, including immersion, three-dimensional visualization, and embodied interaction, which support sustained learner engagement in ways that traditional media rarely achieve. Yet, drawbacks in VR-based learning have also been reported, including higher cognitive load, susceptibility to distraction, and the physical demands of interaction. This raises a question we kept coming back to: what does it take for people to think and learn well inside VR?"
