Today, we are featuring research from S M Ashif Hossain at Texas A&M University.
The Human Factors & Cognitive Systems (HF&CS) Lab at Texas A&M University is dedicated to exploring how humans interact with complex systems and process information in real-world and high-stakes environments. Under the direction of Dr. Thomas Ferris, this lab investigates various aspects of human performance, cognitive workload, and decision-making in scenarios where the effective design of feedback systems can significantly improve user outcomes.
PhD student Ashif's dissertation focuses on understanding the role of haptic feedback systems, such as vibrotactile and electrotactile feedback, in enhancing operator awareness and safety. His experiment explored how vibrotactile feedback could assist operators in a more straightforward multitasking scenario related to the navigation and scanning tasks seen in excavation operations. Ashif plans to extend this work by introducing a virtual reality (VR) environment to simulate a more complex excavation task.
Looking ahead, future studies within Ashif's PhD research will also examine how different types of feedback influence workload, task accuracy, and operator satisfaction in VR environments. These will help researchers to understand the limits of human information processing better and support the design of systems that minimize fatigue and improve overall efficiency.
The HF&CS lab's research extends beyond these specific applications to broader questions of human-technology interaction, with the goal of creating systems that are intuitive, accessible, and effective across a wide range of industries. Whether it's improving operator safety or supporting decision-making under pressure, the HF&CS Lab is committed to advancing our understanding of how humans interact with complex technologies.
