On October 12, young women from around Northeast Ohio celebrated Girls in Aviation Day with the Women in Aviation International (WAI) Kent State collegiate chapter. WAI is an international organization that supports and inspires girls and women in the aviation industry. The Kent State University chapter organized a day of activities for 56 young women ranging from 7 years old to 17 and representing several school districts, youth groups, and Girl Scout Troops. One of the activities was exploring different aviation career paths in virtual reality (VR). The girls learned about commercial aviation flight decks, experiencing the Captain and First Officer positions; navigated the International Space Station like an astronaut; and flew virtual drones as if they were commercial operators. The activities were well received and among the most favorite experiences, which also included a flight in a simulator in a simulator and walking out to the Kent State airplane fleet. The Kent State University students were excited to provide VR experiences to the girls and learn more about different aviation career paths while experiencing immersive VR programs.
