The XRTG is excited to share news from current TG Chair, Dr. Stephanie G. Fussell, who contributed to the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) first formal guidance material on how to use extended reality (XR) technologies in general and commercial aviation training programs. The work was developed to harmonize with similar guidance from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and focuses on how to integrate virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies into pilot training. This guidance represents an important step in moving aviation training forward without compromising quality and safety.
In addition to her work wit the HFES community, Dr. Fussell contributed to the SAE ARINC "EmTech" working group's ARINC451: Guidance on the Application of Extended Reality (XR) And Supporting Technologies to Flight Training and Simulation, she is a technical advisor to the International Civil Aviation Organization Personnel Training and Licensing Panel as part of the U.S. delegation, and she is a member of the FAA's Air Carrier Training Aviation Rulemaking Committee Flight Simulation Training Device (FSTD) Working Group. Her research focuses on applying XR technologies to improve learning and training outcomes in dynamic environments, prioritizing research questions on usability, user experience, and transfer of training.
Dr. Fussell is passionate about using XR safely and correctly in aviation training, and the XRTG is glad to have her expertise within the community.
