[HFES: Human Performance Modeling Technical Group *Member Spotlight* Series]
We're highlighting our TG members and their modeling work. If you want to be featured or know anyone who might be interested, please let me know!!
1. So, who are you?
I am Junho Park, PhD, an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Calgary (Canada). My work extends human performance modeling from its traditional industrial engineering foundations into clinical and biomedical engineering contexts, particularly technologies for people with limb amputation.
2. How did you end up working on modeling?
I came to modeling through a practical question: Can we predict whether a technology will improve human performance before it is fully developed or tested with patients?
3. What is the most challenging part in your modeling work?
The hardest part is not accuracy alone, but keeping models mechanistically meaningful, transparent, and sensitive to workload, trust, errors, and agency.
4. Anything special HPMTGers should know about you?
I am honored to have been elected Chair-elect of the HPM-TG and look forward to serving the HPM community over the coming year.
5. What is the study/tool/work in the field of human performance modeling you are most proud of?
I am especially proud of two modeling efforts developed with Dr. Maryam Zahabi: HPM-UP, which predicts upper-limb prosthesis usability using human-centered constructs and empirical data, and N-CPM, which models novice cognitive performance, memory demands, and errors.
6. Anything you would like to say to HPMTGers?
At ASPIRE 2026, I will present "Future of Human Performance Modeling in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Toward AI-Augmented, Verifiable, and Agency-Preserving HPM." I invite HPMTG colleagues to read it and connect at junho.park@ucalgary.ca.
