I'm excited to announce an upcoming HFES - Human Factors and Ergonomics Society webinar hosted by the Extended Reality Technical Group (XRTG) at HFES and the Training Technical Group on August 14th at 12 PM noon Eastern. We are pleased to have Dr. Benjamin Goldberg speak about Moderating and Measuring Competency Development in Immersive Learning Environments.

Webinar registration is free for both HFES members and nonmembers:

HFES Learning: HFES Extended Reality Technical Group and Training Technical Group Webinar: Moderating and Measuring Competency Development in Immersive Learning Environments

In this presentation, Dr. Goldberg will review a program of applied research centered on Competency-Based Experiential Learning (CBEL) and the role of data and learning engineering to optimize the use of simulation in meeting organizational training objectives and proficiency needs. The goal of the research is to establish and mature a scalable data strategy that leverages intelligent tutoring services and data interoperability standards in the context of active and experiential learning. This involves tracking performance and progress across multiple competency development phases, and delivering meaningful scenarios and deliberate practice experiences that target specific competencies (i.e., knowledge, skills, behaviors) aligned to a learning objective. Two primary themes will be discussed: (1) defining and modeling competencies for development in immersive environments, and (2) applying experience design methods to create scenarios with embedded assessments aligned to established competencies. This will include a review of existing technologies, methods and standards being matured to support these practices at scale across individual and team learning domains.

Dr. Benjamin Goldberg is a Senior Scientist and Technical Lead for the Adaptive & Intelligent Training Systems Team at the U.S. Army DEVCOM Soldier Center. His research focuses on adaptive experiential learning with an emphasis on simulation-based environments and leveraging data and Artificial Intelligence to create personalized experiences that drive accelerated competency development. Dr. Goldberg holds a Ph.D. in Modeling & Simulation from the University of Central Florida and is well published across several high-impact journals and proceedings, including IEEE Transactions of Learning Technologies, the Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education, and Computers in Human Behavior.

    Thank you!
