Job DescriptionThe Cognitive engineering group at Polytechnique Montreal is hiring one postdoctoral fellow to lead research on the flight deck of the future. In this project, you will investigate the future tasks of pilots and how technology will change aviation in the next 15 years; prototype human-machine interactions on a flight simulator and test your designs with real pilots. The project you will work on involves three Canadian universities: Polytechnique Montreal, McGill University and Toronto Metropolitan University; and counts on the support of seven industrial partners from the aerospace sector: Adacel, Bombardier, CMC Electronics, Marinvent, NavCanada, Presagis and Thales. You will work closely with researchers from each organization.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will carry out the responsibilities of this position with dynamism and creativity. Among other duties, you will:
- Science. You will advance knowledge on Human-automation teaming (HAT), functional allocation, decision-making in the cockpit and user-centered design.
- Publish. You will publish original research as first author in journals such as Human Factors, International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems and IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems.
- Supervise. You will work with a team of 5 MScs and PhDs and several engineering interns where you will develop supervision and mentoring experience.
- Manage. You will lead the close coordination between the researchers from three universities and seven aerospace companies involved in this project to make sure everyone hit their milestones;
- Network with academics and representatives from the aerospace industry.
ResourcesWe have the complete suite of software by Presagis to simulate aircraft systems, build the outside world and design the HMIs. When it’s ready for test, you will use the Ontop Duo flight simulator by Virtual Fly located in school.
DurationStart date is as soon as possible. The contract is renewable each year for a total duration of three years.
Salary and benefitsYou will join the union of Postdoctoral fellows be covered by its collective agreement. You will have a
total allowance (salary and benefits) ranging from $60,000 to $80,000 CAD based on experience. This includes:
- Standard workweek of 35h;
- Contribute to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), with the employer matching your contribution up to 5% of your salary;
- Health and medical insurance offered by iA Financial Group;
- 23 days of vacation and 10 days due to sickness.
The work mode is hybrid, meaning that you can work remotely most of the time. You will have to be in Montreal for activities involving user studies, user tests, simulator setup and meetings with partners.
Profile and Job Requirements
- You must have completed your PhD less than 5 years ago;
- You hold a PhD in Engineering, Computer science, Ergonomics or Psychology with courses in human factors;
- You have practical experience to conduct user-centered design activities: user studies, HMI prototyping, usability tests;
- You have published original research in quality journals;
- Having experience in aviation is an asset e.g., test in flight simulator, flight deck design, avionics technologies.
