    Nemours Children's Health Delaware is seeking a Human Factors Engineer for our location in Wilmington, Delaware. The Human Factors Engineer applies various human performance and human factors/ergonomics methodologies to assess performance, process, design, workflow, equipment, and the environment with the purpose of driving improvement and reducing risks. The Human Factors Engineer will work collaboratively with teams throughout the organization to evaluate environments to optimize human well-being, overall system performance, and safety.  As a member of the Patient Safety team and an adjunct member of the Simulation team, the Human Factors Engineer will act as a change agent to improve patient safety.

    A successful candidate will have strong analytical, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with a passion for usability and a creative eye for excellent design.  A key role of the position is to support the organization in the area of patient safety through the application of expertise in human factors/usability engineering.  The Human Factors Engineer will independently apply human factors methodologies (i.e. heuristic evaluation and usability testing) to examine processes, human error potential, and patient safety risk.

    Essential Functions:

    • Advance patient safety and quality of care:
      • As a member of the safety team, participates in the review of safety risks and safety events 
      • Works  with the simulation team in their systems integration efforts
    • Develops project plans, interventions, and resources by integrating human factors methodology and research to achieve the visionary/strategic objectives of stakeholders. Incorporates active/effective decision making and problem solving. 
    • Plays an active role in defining and executing initiatives within the Nemours strategic pillars. 
    • Provides recommendations and support for improvement activities and projects to proactively mitigate safety risk factors to improve human and organizational performance.
    • Works with leaders and staff to integrate Safety Behaviors for Error Prevention into one's work.  Active support of cause analysis work including Root Cause Analysis and Apparent Cause Analysis.
    • Focuses on integrating clinical/medical leadership, patient/family, operational, and academic goals and expectations to ensure multi-level outcomes and deliverables that jointly optimize the social and technical aspect of the work system. These outcomes include, but are not limited to: 
      • Improving quality of care and patient safety; 
      • Reducing errors, fatigue, stress and injuries; 
      • Improving productivity, ease of use, safety (physical/psychological), comfort, acceptance, job satisfaction, and quality of life; 
      • Boosting individual, team and organizational resiliency; and 
      • Enhancing usability and functionality of our tools and technology.

    Requirements:

    • MS in Human Factors Engineering/Psychology or related field (e.g., industrial/systems engineering, cognitive neuroscience, perception, industrial/organizational psychology, or ergonomics) from a fully accredited college or university.
    • At least 3 years related experience. Healthcare related experience preferred.
    • Must have strong consulting skills, strong presentation skills and experience managing or facilitating change through a consultative role. 
    • Experience with healthcare simulation preferred.
