The HUMAN PERFORMANCE MODELING TECHNICAL GROUP The Human Performance Modeling Technical Group focuses on the development and application of predictive, reliable, and executable quantitative models of human performance. In distinction to other approaches to behavioral and cognitive modeling, human performance modeling considers the human, engaged in some goal-directed behavior, in the context of a designed task environment.

    Dear HPMTG Members,

    I am delighted to report a great turnout at this year's HFES conference! For those unable to attend the HPMTG business meeting, I've attached the presentation slides with this year's TG updates for your reference. We extend a heartfelt thank you to our reviewers for the conference proposals and to the award committee reviewers, whose support has been invaluable to our success. I would like to once again congratulate our award recipients for their outstanding contributions.

    • Best Paper Award: "Proposal of ACT-R Cognitive Modeling Method for Stroop Task Based on Quantitative Prediction of Mental Workload" by Hyungseok Oh, Yongdeok Yun, Rohae Myung.
    • Best Student Paper Award: "Effects of Color Commonality of Overlay Clutter and Information Access Effort on Tasks Requiring Visual Search" by Amelia Warden, Christopher Wickens, Benjamin Clegg, Francisco Ortega.
    •  Student Travel Award: "Automatic Error Model (AEM) for User Interface Design: A new approach to Include Errors and Error Corrections in a Cognitive User Model" by Amir Bagherzadeh, Farnaz Tehranchi.

    Action Items from the Business Meeting and Announcements:

    1. Nominations for HPMTG Officers:

    • Positions: TG Chair (Nov 2024-Oct 2026), Program Chair (Nov 2024-Oct 2026), and Communication Chair (Webmaster).
    • Nomination Deadline: Extended to December 15th, 2023.
    • Submit nominations to Yiqi Zhang at yuz450@psu.edu.

    2. Call for Best Research Proposal Award Applications:

    • Purpose: This award aims to provide support to researchers and students for their research expenses and attendance at next year's annual meeting. The recipient will have the opportunity to present their research project during next year's business meeting. We believe that this award can serve as a valuable incentive, ultimately boosting submissions and enhancing engagement within our research community.
    • Requirements:
      • Cover Page: Include your name, affiliation, and contact information.
      • Proposal Narrative: Limit to 3 pages.
      • Budget: Provide a detailed budget, limited to 1 page.
      • Letter of Recommendation: Required only if the applicant is a student.
      • Submission Deadline: December 30th, 2023.
      • Award Amount: $499.
      • Submission Instructions: Please send your complete proposal package directly to Yiqi Zhang at yuz450@psu.edu.

    3. HPM Research Newsletter Contributions: We warmly invite contributions for our newsletter, focused on showcasing achievements and developments in Human Performance Modeling (HPM). If you have relevant insights, research breakthroughs, or notable accomplishments in HPM, please share them with us. These contributions will be distributed through our communication channels and featured prominently in our newsletter. Additionally, once a webmaster is appointed, they will join in facilitating this process. Your participation is invaluable in highlighting the diverse and dynamic work within our HPM community. We welcome a range of submissions, including but not limited to:

    • Research projects specifically related to HPM
    • Publications such as research papers or books in the HPM field
    • Recognitions like awards, scholarships, or grants associated with HPM
    • Engagements at conferences or industry events relevant to HPM

    4. Monthly HPM-Research Symposium: Starting in January 2024, we're excited to launch a monthly online HPM-Research Symposium series. This initiative aims to spotlight researchers across the various domains of Human Performance Modeling. Our goal is to showcase emerging research, foster engaging discussions, and spark collaborations that propel advancements in HPM. We're currently seeking speakers. If you're interested in presenting your work, please contact me. We look forward to your participation in enriching our research community.
