    Abstract submission

    Welcome to DDI 2024!

This premiere international event on the topic of inattention and distracted driving attracts delegates from more than 20 countries with participants in government, industry and academia, and is designed to bring all participants up-to-date on developments and trends in the field.  And, for the first time in its history, it is headed to the United States!

The upcoming conference features keynote speakers, plenary and parallel sessions, a poster exhibition, student submission competitions, and panel dialogue with experts from various disciplines in this research area.  Generous opportunities for networking are woven throughout the conference, including an optional pre-conference workshop, so that participants may engage in conversation with experts from around the world to move forward with our common challenge: to save lives in traffic.

The Scientific Committee welcomes extended abstracts for presentations, papers or posters from all stakeholder groups (researchers, designers, engineers, policy makers, transport companies, etc.), from all modes of transport (land, air and sea) and from any relevant discipline including, but not limited to, psychology, neuropsychology, neuroscience, human factors, medicine, ergonomics, sociology, epidemiology, engineering and technology, law and politics, etc. All extended abstracts and papers for DDI proceedings are peer‐reviewed by the conference Scientific Committee.

DDI2024 follows the highly successful DDI conferences held previously in Gothenburg, Sweden (2009, 2011, 2013, 2018, 2022), Sydney, Australia (2015), and Paris, France (2017). The conference in 2021 was held online.

We will cooperate with a high impact factor scientific journal and the authors of the best abstracts will be invited to submit a full paper to a special issue of the journal. All conference papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two international experts on driver distraction and inattention, all of whom are members of the conference Scientific Committee.

The conference is organized by the SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, the Université Gustave Eiffel, France and the University of New South Wales, Australia, and hosted by University of Michigan, USA.

We are very pleased to welcome you to this important international road safety event!

    Best regards,

Co-chair Dr Alexandra Fort, Université Gustave Eiffel, France
Co-chair Dr Christophe Jallais, Université Gustave Eiffel, France
Conference host Jim Sayer, University of Michigan, US
Co-chair Dr Jonas Bärgman, SAFER Vehicle and traffic safety centre at Chalmers university of technology, Sweden
Co-chair Prof Michael Regan, University of New South Wales, Australia

    All students welcome!

    Best Student Award

We are happy to announce our Student Award! Every student with an accepted abstract will receive a complimentary entrance ticket. The outstanding student, judged based on both presentation and abstract, will be honored with the prestigious Best Student Award, along with a prize sum (to be announced) and a complimentary entrance ticket to the next conference edition in 2026.

    Conference theme:

Advances in understanding and management of distraction and inattention for all road users

"A problem well stated is a problem half solved," according to academic philosopher John Dewey, who taught 140 years ago at the University of Michigan, the site of the DDI2024 conference. The 9th International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention will focus on recent advances in the scientific understanding of the theory, effects and management of distraction and inattention, for all road users. Does research suggest that safety has improved in the many countries and localities that have enacted legislation carrying varying penalties for distracted driving? Is introducing another piece of technology that monitors driver habits going to further distract drivers?
What responsibility does the operator of each mode of transportation have on the responsibility of others, and what challenges are present in collecting the appropriate data? Have challenges imposed by the pandemic increased distraction and inattention for all road users? We encourage theme-related contributions as outlined below but of course welcome all high-quality scientific research and other contributions within the general scope of the conference as well.

    Keynote speakers

We are delighted to announce that Professor John Lee has  accepted our invitation to be a keynote speaker at the event. Hailing from the esteemed Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Professor Lee will undoubtedly enrich the conference with his expertise aligned with the event's theme. Attendees can anticipate gaining valuable insights and perspectives on industrial and systems engineering from Professor Lee, making this a not-to-be-missed opportunity for all participants.

Welcome to the conference venue Ann Arbor!

The Michigan Union will serve as a backdrop for the 2024 Conference. The Union, which originally opened its doors to students in 1919, is one of the oldest buildings on campus featuring ballrooms, large and small. Recent renovations have brought the Union into the 21st century in terms of technology and services, balancing the historic charm of the facility with energy efficient changes. The remodeling also uncovered original slate and terrazzo floors throughout, in addition to limestone doorways that had been covered for decades.

In Ann Arbor, there are hotel accommodations for over 4,000, and numerous restaurants ranging from 5-star eateries to breweries and those serving local fare. Hotel blocks for conference attendees will be announced by October 31, 2023.
