Please join me for our next FPTG webinar. Details Below

    Who: Jay Miller
What: Cognitive Fatigue in Forensics HF
    When: November 17, 1pm PST / 4pm EST

    Abstract
Often, when competent, well-trained, current individuals have an accident it is possible that mental fatigue was a contributing factor. The webinar has two objectives. First, to show how I determine whether mental (cognitive) fatigue was a probable factor in an accident. Second, to show how I testify about that relationship. There are five sections in the presentation, as follow. (1) The presenter's bona fides. (2) A brief introduction to the natures and effects of circadian rhythms. (3) A brief introduction to sleep physiology. (4) Overviews of cognitive fatigue resulting from circadian rhythm and sleep disruptions, and of fatigue risk management. (5) Finally, how I present the causal nature of cognitive fatigue effects in depositions.
    Bio
James C. Miler, Ph.D., CPE (#64, ret), spent 45 years in applied research concerning the causes and effects of cognitive fatigue, working both in Department of Defense laboratories and civilian enterprises. He has provided more than 30 human factors forensic consultations over several decades, most of which dealt with fatigue as a causal factor in accidents; most of the accidents occurred in the transportation modes, and most of the accidents involved fatalities. He is the author of several books, including The Anatomy of a Fatigue-Related Accident (2013). He is an emeritus member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA), a Fellow of the Aerospace Human Factors Association (AsHFA), and a former and formerly-fatigued USAF C-130 Hercules pilot and Vietnam veteran.
