    Contribute to our Special Issue on Human-Robot Collaboration in Occupational Settings

    Description:

    Human-robot collaboration (HRC) is emerging in the occupational domain, in which one or more humans and one or more robots share a workspace and, ideally, collaborate to enhance productivity and human health and safety. There is a need for the Human Factors and Ergonomics community to systematically assess the benefits and potential limitations of HRC in various occupational settings to better utilize the technology for safety and health risk control, while avoiding risk exposures that may be introduced due to inadequate consideration of human factors. Several aspects of HRC are relevant for this special issue, including: effects of task types, task allocation, robot intelligence and capacities, levels of collaboration, and human robot communications or interaction modalities. 

    This special issue will include contributions that address the potential or actual advantages and challenges associated with the occupational applications of HRC to facilitate safe and effective implementation in diverse occupational settings. 

    Topics of interest include but are not limited to the topics below. However, papers accepted for this special issue must have a central focus on the "human" in HRC.

    • Theoretical frameworks for HRC in occupational settings
    • Collaborative robots (cobots) and work allocation between humans and robots
    • Multi-human, multi-robot collaborations
    • Industry-specific health and safety issues
    • Testbed HRC systems and processes for evaluation
    • Use of mixed reality for enhanced situation awareness
    • Interaction modalities in HRC
    • Human perception, attention, prediction, and/or intention estimation for HRC
    • Robot intelligence and its effects on trust, performance, and safety of collaboration
    • Human cognitive workload and mental stress associated with HRC tasks
    • Stationary, collaborative, mobile, and medical robots, drones, powered exoskeletons, and autonomous ground vehicles

    What can I contribute?

    • Submissions are welcomed using any of the journal's manuscript types (i.e., Original Research, Methods/Models/Theories, Reviews, Brief Reports, Position Papers, Viewpoints, Historical Perspectives, Emerging Issues, Applications, and Case Reports)
    • Submissions addressing the perceptual, cognitive, physical, environmental, safety, usability, psychosocial, or organizational ergonomics related to the current or future use of HRC.
    • Methodological diversity is encouraged; we welcome submissions using qualitative approaches, action research methodologies, surveys, computer modeling, technical measurements, simulations, data analytics methods, and observational approaches

    Letters of intent (LOIs) are strongly encouraged prior to submission but are not required. Prompt feedback will be provided to ensure compatibility with the special issue. LOIs should be addressed to Dr. Sol Lim at sol@vt.edu.

    All papers must be submitted through the journal's ScholarOne online submission website (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/oehf). All submissions must abide by the journal's requirements, and the journal's regular processes will be followed for review of submissions. 

    During the online submission process, please indicate that your submission is for this special issue, entitled "Human-Robot Collaboration," when prompted for this at the submission website.
