    CTG Business Meeting 2023

    Minutes from our business meeting, as recorded by Aaron Bangor:

    I. Call to order

    ·         Wednesday October 25, 2023 @ 3:30pm ET

    ·         Attendees

      • Aaron Bangor

    II. Budget

    • Balance as of Aug. 31, 2023: $17,979
    • TG average is about $16K

    III. Elections

    • Council of technical groups (CoTG) would like to start to standardize TG officer terms to 1/1-12/31 of a given year. This will officially start at next year's annual meeting (now called ASPIRE), but we'd like to begin this for 2024.
      • TGs still have purview over officer roles and duration
    • Is there a limitation to who can fill a TG officer role?
      • TG chair, program chair, and program chair elect: must be Full Members of HFES, and members of the technical group. Other officer roles only have to be members of the technical group.
    • Aaron to post call for nominations after conclusion of Annual Meeting.

    IV. 2024 planning

    • Events
      • Suggestion to do a webinar series throughout 2024 on Accessible Communications topics and then to create a panel for the 2024 Annual Meeting made up of the webinar speakers.
        • Would need to recruit speakers and plan webinars before Call for Proposals so a panel proposal can be made.
      • Suggestion to create a student session at the 2024 Annual Meeting incented by a best student paper award
        • Would need to be promoted to students before Call for Proposals

    V. New business

    • Dues
      • Suggestion to waive for students (Aaron to check with Central Office if this is feasible)
      • Suggestion to price CTG at average for TGs ($5)
    • Update TG description – Barbara
      • Current: The Communication Technical Group is concerned with all aspects of human-to-human communication, with special emphasis on communication mediated by technology. Includes telephone services, multimedia communications (e.g., Internet services, Internet telephony, interactive TV, desktop videoconferencing, collaborative communications, and multimedia information services). Includes the design and evaluation of user interfaces of products, systems, and services; enabling technologies such as speech and pen input, telephone, and TV input devices; and infrastructure technologies such as operations software, product documentation, and training.
    • Questions for CoTG / Central Office
      • Do people know what a business meeting is for?
      • Were abstracts-only submissions accepted / encouraged this year? Just for a talk? Was there a format for them?
