This panel brings together experts in the fields of Human Factors, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to discuss the state of the art and research and design frontiers relating to the application of AI technologies to Healthcare. Advances in AI, machine learning, and robotics promise to revolutionize access to and quality of healthcare. This includes earlier detection, improved diagnosis, more targeted and personalized therapies and robotic assistance for patient rehabilitation and in-home care. At the same time lessons learned from previous waves of AI technology suggest the need for careful consideration of the use context and the broader sociotechnical system perspective to avoid developing brittle systems that fail to be used or worse that negatively impact provider experience and patient care.
The panel session will begin with brief presentations by each panel member summarizing their perspective on opportunities and challenges of leveraging AI technologies in healthcare. We will then open it up to questions from the 'virtual' audience.
Panel members include Brenna Argall, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Northwestern University, whose research is at the intersection of artificial intelligence, rehabilitation robotics and machine learning; Barbara Barry, Assistant Professor, Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery, Mayo Clinic, whose research concerns patient and provider interactions with AI in healthcare systems to enhance decision-making and trust; Pascale Carayon, Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison, whose research encompasses the application of human factors and systems engineering and the analysis and design of sociotechnical systems in health care and patient safety; Sara Czaja, Director of the Center on Aging and Behavioral Research at Weill Cornel Medicine, whose research focusses on designing for an aging population; and Raj Ratwani, Director, MedStar Health National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare whose research focusses on health information technology usability and safety. Emilie Roth, Roth Cognitive Engineering will serve as panel chair.
This panel is organized by the National Academies Board of Human Systems Integration (BOHSI). BOHSI is a standing board whose aim is to better equip the National Academies in its efforts to assist the federal government on issues of national policy that involve human factors and human-systems integration. It is housed within the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, and is sponsored by a coordinated consortium of several federal agencies and other organizations including the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
