  • 1.  General liability insurance for those in consulting

I am looking for a new business general liability insurance provider and was wondering if any HFES members who run consulting business have recommendations for a insurance company that understands the type of work we typically do and can price the liability insurance accordingly.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I have used Hiscox for the last 5 years. They are well regarded and my insurance agent felt they were a good choice. Fortunately, I have never had to make a claim, so I can't vouch for their services.
I pay about $500/year for $1 Million in Professional Liability Insurance (aka. Errors and Omissions insurance). I chose the category of Management Consulting and this rate is for Illinois.

Brian, you need to look for two different coverages:  CGL (comprehensive general liability) and Errors and Omissions (Professional Liability).  CGL for a consulting business should be relatively inexpensive.  I had mine through the Hartford for many years and the premium was around $500.  E&O is a different subject.  I declared that I did not design anything, but at most reviewed other people's designs.  That still creates a potential E&O exposure.  My Professional Liability was through the Philadelphia Insurance Co and I paid about $3000/year.

I say these things in the past tense because I closed my business last year in anticipation of full retirement soon.

You will have to find a broker to initiate these policies, although the Hartford had a captive broker who wrote these smaller policies.  Regarding the E&O, I would see if any company, like the Philadelphia Insurance Co, would direct you to a broker. You could spend a great deal of time searching for a broker for the E&O unless you are a very big operation.

    Hope this helps...
