Rich Holden provided some more guidance on the position papers so I am passing that along.

I define a position paper as a "Society-backed, expert-authored, published treatise consolidating leading thoughts and evidence on a specific topic, toward shaping future research/practice."

A TG (or multiple TGs) represented by a team of members, would pick a topic in their area of expertise with broader societal implications, for example, autonomous vehicles, work hour restrictions, sustainable energy, or medical device usability. They would prepare a short paper (~3,000 words or less) applying relevant HF/E theories, principles, methods, and findings to the topic. Papers will typically include recommendations and implications for future research, practice, and (optionally) policy. HFES will evaluate papers for societal endorsement and dissemination. My working assumption is the paper's authors will seek publication of position papers in a peer-reviewed human factors journal, but we are still working out those specifics.

I am happy to talk further about position papers and at some point we will reach out to you and the TGs directly about specific position paper topics they might tackle. Until then, I'd love to know if any TGs or TG members are passionate about topics they think would make for compelling position papers.
